How diazepam works
Diazepam enhances the effect of gamma-aminobutyric acid (GABA) at the GABA-A receptor — the same target as other benzodiazepines. By strengthening GABA’s calming signal it produces anxiolytic, muscle-relaxant, sedative, hypnotic and anticonvulsant effects. Because diazepam and its active metabolites have long half-lives, its effect is smooth and long-lasting compared to short-acting benzodiazepines like alprazolam.

How to take Bensedin safely

- Do not stop abruptly. Discontinuing suddenly after regular use can trigger dangerous withdrawal, including seizures — always taper under medical guidance.

Warnings and precautions
Diazepam carries a boxed warning for concomitant use with opioids and for risks of misuse and dependence. Tell your prescriber about any history of substance use, respiratory disease, glaucoma, sleep apnoea, myasthenia gravis, liver disease, depression or suicidal thoughts.
Do not combine Bensedin with
- Alcohol — dangerously additive CNS depression
- Opioids — risk of fatal respiratory depression (boxed warning)
- Other benzodiazepines, sleep aids, sedating antihistamines
- Some antifungals, antibiotics and antidepressants that raise diazepam levels
Pregnancy and breastfeeding
Diazepam crosses the placenta and passes into breast milk; use in late pregnancy can cause neonatal withdrawal and floppy-infant syndrome. Discuss safer alternatives with your prescriber.
