Walk down any supplement aisle and you’ll see probiotic labels shouting numbers at you — 10 billion! 50 billion! 100 billion CFU! Here’s the honest truth from behind the pharmacy counter: the biggest number is not automatically the best choice. What matters is whether the right strains survive long enough to reach your intestines, where they actually do their work.

What probiotics really do

Your gut hosts trillions of bacteria that help digest food, produce certain vitamins, and train your immune system — roughly 70% of which lives in your gut. A quality probiotic doesn’t “replace” this ecosystem; it reinforces it during and after disruptions like antibiotics, travel, stress, or an erratic diet.

The three things worth checking on a label

  • Strain diversity beats raw count. A blend of 10–12 researched Lactobacillus and Bifidobacterium strains covers more functional ground than a megadose of one strain.
  • Delivery matters more than dose. Stomach acid destroys unprotected bacteria. Look for delayed-release or acid-resistant capsules — otherwise much of that 50 billion never arrives.
  • Shelf-stability is a quality signal. Freeze-dried, shelf-stable formulas mean the maker validated survivability. A fridge requirement isn’t automatically better.

Pharmacist tip: taking antibiotics? Keep taking your probiotic — just separate the two by at least two hours, and continue for two weeks after the antibiotic course ends.

How long until you notice something?

Set honest expectations: most people notice steadier digestion within one to two weeks of consistent daily use. The deeper microbiome benefits build over one to two months. If nothing has changed after eight consistent weeks, that particular formula probably is not the one for you.

Don’t forget the prebiotics

Probiotics are the seeds; prebiotic fiber is the fertilizer. Onions, garlic, oats, bananas, and asparagus feed the good bacteria you’re adding. A formula that includes a prebiotic like FOS gives you a head start, but a fiber-rich plate is still the most powerful gut supplement there is.
